A twentyfirst man has himself frozen and wakes up three thousand years in the future in world without men.
When Joe Hermann, a twenty-first century man, is told that he's dying of cancer, he has his body frozen in hopes that in the near future a cure will be found. But a pandemic kills ninety percent of the world's population, and he wakes in a world vastly changed. It is populated only by women. Men are a legend and considered devils. Reproduction is through cloning. At first this seem like a man's dream come true -- to be the only man in a world of women. But, he is considered a freak, and the women consider having sex with him a perversion, akin to having sex with an animal. To pay for his hospital bills, he is indentured to two beautiful, sexy young women. But some women are deviants, such as Shimka the vet who has sex with her animals and Hermann. Although there are few rules in this society, the priestesses of the Temple of Medis settle disputes and have the secrets of the past. When Priestess Nagalagy learns that he is a male, she calls him a bagod, their name for devil. She insists that he stay with her so that she can teach him the "ways of Medis, Love, Peace and Wisdom." Hermann learns the history of the world from the time when he was frozen until the era he finds himself in. Hermann makes love to each of his mistresses, individually and together. Soon both women became pregnant. When Div and Dav's neighbors get wind of this, Div and Dav sell Hermann's stud services. Eventually Hermann wins his freedom and learns that men exist, but not on earth. Nagalagy wants him to leave for outer space before he causes more mischief. After a tearful good-bye with his former mistresses, Herman journeys toward the spaceport. His ship is attacked by pirates, who steal his money and make him their slave. When Hermann escapes Metissa, he makes his way to the spaceport where a spaceship takes him to Vegasworld, an artificial moon circling Saturn. In Vegasworld many exotic entertainments can be obtained. When Hermann meets Ulter Vasik, Vasik suggests that they rent female humanoid robots. After a night of debauchery, Hermann learns that Vasik and the robots have stolen his money. Broke in a civilization whose rules he barely understands, he get a job hydrogen mining in the outer solar system. Hermann signs up for a three-year hitch. Once aboard the mining ship, Hermann finds out why the pay is so good. It is an extremely dangerous job in a hostile environment at the edge of the solar system. The miners are tough and hard boiled. Disputes in the mining community are settled by fights using huge cyborg machines. Bullied by Brut Borg, Hermann challenges him and kills him. Hermann finds a way to return to the female society of earth and to his former mistresses, Div and Dav, who he discovers that he loved.
