I look for the slightly unusual, the somewhat off, the trace of the transcendent in everything I try. And I try to put it into what I write so readers can find it too.
Look and Listen
Biography
I am a freelance writer, an author, an assistant-manager of a performing arts center and an actor. Sometimes I portray actors on stage, and other times I do my writing about acting. It all ties in to telling stories, which I do in one way or the other in most of the things I do, it seems. I'm introverted, and that's not a flaw. I even started a club of local introverts. Unmarried, no kids, and no cat. I'm allergic, so I'm one of the few writers without one.
Inspiration
Theatre has inspired my writing in more ways than one. Lots of my fiction has taken place inside the world of theatre, but even that which does not owes a certain to my life on stage. The importance of dialogue and the memorable characters. The knowledge that words formed into a story reflecting back at an audience can change lives, quickly and forever. A respect for that audience without pandering and judging. The intrinsic need for human being to consume stories. And there is also a transcendent quality in the theatre. A production is always more than the sum of its parts, especially when it's going well. There is always an X-factor, an invisible something that tweaks our understanding of reality. Much of my fiction is set just off to the side of reality. Not always fantasy, but certainly possessive of a quality that I hope enhances life as opposed to distracting from it.
