Biography
Personal apocalypse survivor. Born into an academic family, from the moment I could write I wrote: poetry, fiction, plays, scripts. Surrounded by illness and death. Deceased people I love: my father, my aunt, my uncle, my father's best friend, an old lady who lived next door... Cancer survivors: my daughter and wife. I think living is difficult - not for everyone, but for a lot of people. I am author of the following works: Now We Are Green – A fictionalised account of the life of William Tarkovsky and the rise of New Creationism. To The Bridge – A novel about love, loss and the search for redemption. Hunch – The ruthlessness of television unveiled. TV producer Tom Green acts upon a dangerous hunch… Swog – In a future-medieval empire whose economy depends entirely on fish can Swog benefit from having an enormously long tongue? A tale which explores loyalty, medievalism and the nature of appetite. Green Messiah – First instalment of my work in progress: a novel that delivers not just one green messiah but two whilst exploring cult brainwashing, bipolar disorder and the philosophy of the eco-apocalypse. Possibly controversial… definitely provocative. The Book of New Creation – The eco-philosophy of William Tarkovsky. Can humanity survive without it? A Green Philosophy – William Tarkovsky’s internet postings, compiled in a single volume. Portnoy’s Defence – A defence of onanism from the wonderful German professor Leo P. Strong. I exert myself with this pithy translation. Elven Dogs – The ambitious fantasy novel I have yet to write. You vote on whether or not it should be finished… Speaking in a monotone – Poems exploring rhythm, repetition and rage. Being Left Behind – Poetry about love, loneliness and the redemptive power of beauty. And, lastly, a handful of short stories. All of the above can be found on my innovative website www.lukeandreski.com (innovative because readers can make money re-selling my books). My intentions: to break free of literary constraints and write the definitive eco-novel. A preview and extract are available at www.greenmessiah.com.
Inspiration
I am a Dickens enthusiast; a fan of American “alt. country”; politically misanthropic; profoundly interested in human relationships (especially within the family); a lover of nature; enemy of my own pessimism. I write because I need to and because I love the act of creation, because I love words, because I want to be adored, because I want you to sit back and think 'God, that was a beautiful line / paragraph or perfectly constructed chapter or book'... I write because I want to understand the world and sometimes feel, as I hone down a piece of text, that it more and more closely approaches (like iterative scientific hypotheses) the true nature of the world. I write in an attempt to understand what and who I am.
