John Brown raided the federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry on October 16, 1859 with the intent of gathering the weapons and arming the slaves. Colonel Robert E. Lee commanded the military forces and captured John Brown. The rebel leader was taken to nearby Charlestown, VA where a trial was held and Brown was sentenced to hang. Virginia Governor Wise sent 3000 militia to Charlestown to guard Brown and his men, as there were fears that Brown would escape.
