“The Ohio River -In American History and Voyaging on Today's River” also addresses the Allegheny, Monongahela, Kanawha, Muskingum, Kentucky, Green and Wabash Rivers. The first five chapters –Section I –explores 300 years of rich American History along the Ohio River and its tributaries, including the French and Indian War, the American Revolution in the West, our country’s expansion into the Northwest Territories, Lewis and Clark on the Ohio River, the Underground Railroad, the Civil War, the Steamboat Era, the evolution of the current lock and dam system, and the rise and decline of 19th, 20th, and 21st Century river industries. Section II –the Regional Section –geographically divides the Ohio River and its navigable tributaries into eleven distinct regions. The individual colorful histories, as well as the current amenities found in 200 river town are addressed here. This section contains 27 river locality sketches (i.e., rough maps) that make up the entire region. There are also 56 tables contained in these eleven regional chapters that provide information on marinas, waterfront restaurants, boat ramps, seawalls, docks, and other on-the-water facilities. The last three chapters of the book –Section III –focus on boating, to include negotiating through locks and dams, commercial towboat operations, and many specific Ohio River safe boating tips. There are eleven appendices that list more than 60 annual river festivals, information 59 locks and dams, bridge clearance information, hundreds of marinas and restaurants, scores of free docks, 85 GPS waypoints, plus much more. Several hundred telephone numbers and 86 black and white photographs are interspersed throughout this book. “The Ohio River…” is the seventh book researched and written by Captain Rick Rhodes. Captain Rick has published two books with Pelican Publishing Company (New Orleans): “From Lake Michigan to Kentucky Lake (2002);” and “Cruising Guide to Florida’s Big Bend (i.e., the Florida Gulf Coast) including the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, Flint, and Suwannee Rivers (2003).” Rick also has the self-published title “Discovering the Tidal Potomac River.” The first edition came out in 1998, and the second edition was released in 2003. Captain Rick also wrote two books on the ‘Bay Island of Honduras’ –one for Wescott Cove Publishing (Stamford, Connecticut) in 1995, and another was self-published in 1998. Between 1999 and 2000, Rick Rhodes served as a volunteer in the US Peace Corps in South America.
