A historical novel about Jesse James' dealings in Union County, NC and his association with Merrimon Little.
On February 8, 1829, Lorenzo Merrimon Little was born to James and Sophia Little in Montgomery County, North Carolina. Later, Montgomery County became Stanly County. He grew up near Reed Gold Mine, the richest mining region in the United States at that time, and worked there for a while. Upon the death of his father, Merrimon inherited 968 acres, which he sold to his cousin James M. Little on June 18, 1853. Involved in several civil lawsuits and arrested more than once, he left home in 1855 and eventually settled in Tuolumne County, California, with his cousin William R. Tucker. Montezuma, the city in which he lived, was located about one hundred miles east of San Francisco. That same year rumblings of a war between the states grew. A Southern sympathizer, Merrimon joined the Knights of the Golden Circle, also known as the KGC, sometime around the beginning of the Civil War. Looking back on it, Merrimon considered this the turning point in his life. This was where his story truly began.
