New Writers Forums We have launched our new Writers Groups Forums, thank you to everyone who provided feedback and continue to give us ideas on how to improve.
So far I'm the only one in this group - it's no fun going it alone! Please feel free to sign up and even suggest how the group will work - will we submit works to each other for crit? Or perhaps have short weekly challenges?
Though not currently living abroad, I lived in Sweden four years, in Scotland one year, and in Denmark two years. Living in a VW bus with my wife and 18 month old daughter I freelanced for the trade journals through the winter of 1963. That experience is chronicled in my work in progress memoir, "Our Volkswagen Adventure." Back then, BC, (Before computers and digital cameras) I developed film on the road, printed pictures in darkened hotel rooms, and conducted many interviews for trade magazines. I've been a freelance writer since 1957, though I made a living as a college professor. Retired in 1986 and have since had about seventeen books published (two niche publishes, others Internet publishers). I'd be glad to share my experiences with other writers living abroad. The Society for Technical Communication published my monograph, "How to Write the Technical Article and Get it Published" which is now updated and available for download or as a paperback from www.lulu.com under the title "Freelance Nonfiction Articles." It's full of useful information and the download price is about $2. Freelancing is hard work, but is one way to finance your travels abroad. I was the sole writer for several annual international issues for "International Blue Printer" with articles from several countries. If you check with the commercial attache at your embassy you'll find out what trade fairs are taking place and mine them for article ideas. As a member of the press, there's no entry fee and you might even go to the press luncheon.
