Oh, herro friends. I am young and thus I am stupid. I finished writing a book and was sort of confused about what I should do with it. I read of PublishAmerica, so I sent it to them and no one else. They accepted it. I haven't yet signed the contract because I've since read horrible things about PublishAmerica. My question is, for anyone who may have experience with them, do you have any recommendations? I haven't sent my manuscript anywhere else, so I feel as though I should send it to other places before I make my decision, I'm just wondering about the sorts of experiences anyone else may have had with PublishAmerica. Thanks.
I haven't personally experienced PublishAmerica, but I have a close friend who did and boy, is he unhappy. I guess there is a contract to be signed and you can't do anything with your book until the contract is up. They overpriced his book and the sales have been in the toilet. He considers it a waste of his time.
I am pleased with www.wastelandpress.net. I paid $995.00 for a great looking book and I received 175 copies to sell, to use for promotion and marketing. Take a look around before you commit to PublishAmerica
"Nothing beats a failure but a try!"
"Nothing beats a failure but a try!"
Of course, I'm not here to argue the good, the bad and the uglies about PA! I have not used them so I only voiced the opinion given to me by a friend. I chose to spend 995.00 because I believed in my book and my writing enough to put it out there my way. I didn't want to hear someone accept or reject it. And if PA is not helping with the marketing and the promotion....? I would hope that the author that asked the question about PA does their research and yes, the decision is ultimately theirs, but when asked for an opinion, I will give mine!
"Nothing beats a failure but a try!"
"Nothing beats a failure but a try!"
I went with PA. Getting published for $0.00 was the hook. Any publisher will take your money if you are willing to pay them.
It is also necessary to promote your work, regardless of who you go through, even J.K.Rowlings does signings, and promotes.
If you are not a big name, you must do the work. Being an unknown makes it difficult, regardless of who you go through. I think if I had the money to have my book published, I would still to go with PA and hire a publicist with what the other companies would charge me just to get into print.
I went through PA, got a beautiful product, and now it is up to me to promote and sell it. I am happy--they did what they told me they would do.
I read all the bad things about PA when researching a publisher, and as was already said, most all of it is very old. Check the dates on the comments. I think they made mistakes when first starting out, but have since ironed out the wrinkles.
I have also read bad comments on other publishers. There will always be someone who expects to be a Stephen King without doing any work, and who will blame their publisher when it doesn't happen. King worked to build his name, as did all the other authors who have made it big.
Once your name is out there, you may be snapped up by one of the 'big boys', but your name has to become a household word before that will happen. I don't think our success or failure lies with our publisher, but with how much effort we are willing and able to put into promotion.
I have heard many good things about other publishers as well, so just do your research and go with whichever one seems to fit you and your book. There are many out there.
Good luck,

I'm here to defend PublishAmerica once again. I know there is bad press about them, but it's mostly old stuff that keeps coming up. I published my first book, Visions of Enchantment, with them, and loved the way the book looked, love that they worked with me on everything. They worked with me on my cover, and made slight changes I requested, plus additional requests I asked them for. Now, my second book, Enchantment's Embrace, is in production, yes, with PublishAmerica. I did choose to go with them again. Books three and four in the series will more than likely go to them also.
And the comment about not being able to do anything with the book while under contract-- Well, that goes with any contract, and after all, what I want to do with the book is SELL IT, and everyone has a CONTRACT to sign. I'm not sure about ebooks having a contract because I don't use them. Would you want to work with a publisher who didn't have a contract? It protects you, too.
Yes, it's true, I would love more marketing and Promotional help from them, but these two books have cost me $0.00 bucks, not the 900+ that was mentioned. Why the heck would someone want to pay for a book to be published when it can be done for free?
Trying to find a publisher, like a big time publisher can take up to two years or more. I waited two years to hear back from Dorchester Publishing! In the meantime I had to sit and wait, and, yes, it was requested material, I didn't just send it. I don't know about you, but I don't have time to wait that long. I am going to try ebook publishing for some of my writing, but my BIG novels will go to PA. It was once said that PA accepts anything. That's not true, they are particular these days, and they're not the same publishing company they used to be. This is my opinion, and my comment, but go to the PublishAmerica message board and see how many satisfied authors they really have. In the end go with your own instincts. I did, and I'm totally satisfied with working with them.

Believe me, I nearly paid to have my book published, and of course, there is nothing wrong with that if you can afford it, which I couldn't. But my local newspaper kept coming out with announcements from local authors who used PA. That's what made me check them out to begin with. I read all the negative stuff, too, but decided I would try. At my age, I figured I didn't have a lot to lose. So, for me personally, I am very satisfied with them. As far as giving your opinion, that is why we are all here. It's no problem, and I will always do the same.

I agree with you Pharris, we all have to go with our gut! But we have to research and the author of the original question did right by asking, it certainly gets the dialogue started. And one thing I'm finding out in my short literary career is that we all become possessive and protective over whatever choices we make!
"Nothing beats a failure but a try!"
"Nothing beats a failure but a try!"
It is always a matter of choice. With ANY publisher, some people have good experiences and some bad. That holds true for the majors, also. There are few small presses that do any marketing for you-we all know that the burden is on us to spread the word about our books. It boils down to who you work with and how you work with them-but make no mistake-will will work. PA may be good with some and bad with others. Even those who pay to have a book published have had both good and bad experiences. I guess my advice is do not contact anyone on a Monday morning about publishing your book and go with your gut instinct.

Please I beg of you go to Preditors and Editors on Another realm and read the article about Publish America.
I suggest you ignore them and search for publishers through Preditors and Editors.
You could try www.rainbooks.com they are a great cmpany to start with.
I have been burnt by Publish America-please read the article-remember Money should flow to the author.

Have you thought of sending your book (manuscript) to a commercial publisher? They pay you,you don't pay them. As for PublishAmerica, I've read so many horror stories on Absolute Write and other forums. The best thing to do is stay away from them. I would recommend Lulu (www.lulu.com). I've had some books printed with them, and I did not have to pay $800, $900, even $1,000 to get my book printed. Remember, self-publishing is risky, you won't become a bestselling author going this route... but then again, going with a commercial publisher won't guarantee anything either.
It's basically a crap shoot.

I am published with PublishAmerica, I knew what I was going into when I decided to go with them. Other than the book being a little too expensive I can't complain. I did not have to pay to get my book published and they do get our books out on every online book store available. Yes, I have to get out to promote my book to try to get it in the brick and morter stores, but this has been a very good learning experience for me as I get more into about this confusing big business of writing. PA is good for first time authors trying to get published. I personally am going to try other avenues with my second novel. Not because I don't like them, but because I want to expand my limited knowledge on publishing. I have many more stories to tell and I refuse to become a one book wonder. With hard work and dedication I hope to get picked up by a good publisher. Everything I do becomes a learning experience.
I'm thankful for PA because I got introduced to the Amazon Short Program where I have several short stories published and available for download for a very good price and have many wonderful authors that have taught me some very valuable things. The program has been very good for name recognition also. I would not have been able to do this if I didn't have a book on amazon for sale.
What ever you do... where ever you go, try to go into it with your eyes open. There are problems with anyone you choose, but make sure it is something you are comfortable with. It doesn't matter what anyone else says in the end you will do what is in your heart. My choice was PA, yours may be somewhere else. It all depends on what your ultimate goals are.
I wish you the best as you decide what is best for you.

Yes, Rose, we do become possessive of our choices. The nice thing, however about independent authors is that we are willing to say what did or did not work. There is no question in my mind that PA should not be the only choice and alternatives should be explored-but there truly are PA authors that have had good luck with PA-as with any publisher-it varies. Certainly-do the research and that is one reason NB exists-to help others by sharing our experiences, both + and-.

You hit the nail on the head. Let me tell you, my third book, JESUS TAUGHT IT, TOO; THE EARLY ROOTS OF THE LAW OF ATTRACTION was published by Avatar Publication in Canada. They are a small press. This weekend the book was sales ranked at 10,000 by Amazon and #4 in its category. I am saying telling this to brag. I busted my butt to promote this book and that is what it takes. From blogs to articles to radio to contacting bookstores, etc, etc. It has taken over a year of punching these keys every night to begin the process of building a reputation. The publisher matters very little-it is you-the author, that makes the difference.

The sad fact, my friends, is that the vast majority of new and aspiring writers will not see their work published by a large, major company. There is simply too much competition, too many established authors whose books are going to be there ahead of ours, and too many celebrities who will get their ghost written book published because they have a built in sales factor.
For those who want to go the traditional route, that is to write, submit, try to find an agent, and then brag about all of your rejections, I say go for it. There's nothing wrong with giving it your best shot, even though the odds are stacked heavily against you.
For the others, there are a few choices, a few options, that you can look into. One is to self publish, paying the way at each step of the process, and hoping to attract the attention of someone who will step in and help you secure a bit time contract. Another is to seek out a small press, and hope they will accept your work and get it out before the public so that everyone will know just what the major publishers missed out on. Another is to go with a company like Lulu or Createspace, which are basic POD companies, and do all of the work yourself. Then buy your own ISBN, and do whatever you can to make yourself known. Then there are companies like PublishAmerica, who will publish your book, give it a legitimate ISBN number, and make it available at most all on line book stores. And it won't cost you anything to get it done that way. You will have to sign a 7 year contract, you may not be happy with the price of your book, and you'll have to do most or all of your own promotion. Your book won't be in bookstores everywhere, but then again, neither will it be if you self pub, or go with Lulu or Createspace. In fact, many of the very legitimate small presses won't get your book in every bookstore in the country either.
As an "aspiring" writer, you are going to have to do a lot of your own promotion, regardless of which route you chose, unless you're one of the very small percentage who managage to secure a major publishing contract.
Some of the smaller presses will give you a small advance, and the larger the company, usually the more the advance, but don't be fooled by those who swear you won't have to pay it back. True, if your book doesn't sell, you will not have to pay the advance back out of your pocket, but if it does sell, you won't get any royalties until the publisher recovers all of the costs they have spent on your book. You can call it whatever you want to, but the truth is the truth, no matter what name you use or how much you want it to be some other way.
Look around, make the best choice you can while holding to your own guidelines. Most of the anti PA trash out there is by ex PA authors who thought they had written the next best seller, and then learned that they reason no one else had accepted it was because it wasn't all that good to start with. They can't blame themselves, so they blame PA.
The contract with any publisher is only going to be as good as you make it. With all of them you will have to do a certain amount or promoting, it's just that the smaller the press, the more you will have to do.
Personally, I have accepted the fact that most "aspiring" authors will never be published by a major company, and will never secure the services of a great agent, and I see absolutely no use in garnering enough rejection letters to paper my wall with. I see that more as a badge of wasted time than I do as something to be aspired to. If you have the next 10 or 20 or 30 years to invest in accruing rejection slips, then maybe this is the route for you. I chose not to do so, I went with PA for my first two books, and I have not been disappointed. I wish they sold for less money, I wish PA did more promotion, and I wish they were in bookstores, but at least I don't have a notebook filled with rejection slips. At my age, I simply don't have time to get turned down for the next few years.
Good luck, and believe me when I say that any contract, whether with PA or someone else, will reward you almost exactly as much as the amount of work you put into it. If you're looking for a publisher to do everything for you, maybe you should write a book about pipe dreams.
go and Google PublishAmerica - you should do your research before signing with any publisher.
if, after reading all the stories and facts about them you conclude that tossing your rights away for seven years and having your book unavailable unless you buy copies is what you want, then sign the contract. Be sure to keep lots of money on hand since your book will be unedited and overpriced as well as unlikely to be carried by any bookstore.
remember - you can't soar like an eagle if you're flocking with turkeys!
good luck!
But Eeyore was saying to himself:
"This writing business. Pencils and what-not. Over-rated, if you ask me. Silly stuff. Nothing in it".

Being that I am the original writer of this thread, I am hear to inform everyone that I am real, and did not intend to start a feud. That being said, all of your comments have been incredibly helpful, and very in depth, and I really do appreciate your time and input, and if you wish to continue making comments, I hope that you will. Again, I'm real, and not trying to start an argument. Guess what happens when you assume....
Thaank you for reminding us. It is an area I am weak in. I don't mind getting my book into shape, at the moment I am designing the cover of my second novel, my first was published by Iuniverse, and will publish soon. I am fine with webbuilding etc, but real promotion, where you have to really present yourself, that's where I do badly and i know it. Of course I imagine that POD publishing puts me into a second class bracket and that if i were published by a recognised publisher I would have more reason to be proud of my books and therefore less shy about presenting myself. But, deep down perhaps that's not true. ANd well done to you Phillip for having the gumption to go out there and show yourself,

I do not have any experience with PA, but like you, I have heard some not-so-nice things about them. I have published 3 books (Our Family; Hammie, the Soccer Playing Hamster; Santa's SUV) with Lulu.com and am 100% please with them for POD books.
