I use a four line poem to summarize the meaning of each of my short stories. If there is a Japanese theme, I use Haiku, but the idea is to preview the depth of the piece. Sometimes a short story can go by so fast and by its nature, doesn't have the liberty to emblellish themes, so the reader may not be sure of the point of the story or you may want to fine tune the point of the story. I have received positive comments back for the approach. Think of the poem as the abstract for the story.

Hello John,
I am new to this website and I have just published a poetry book. The more I read what seasoned writers have to say, the more I know I have to still learn. My poetry is basically about my life experiences and it is written in the regular rhyming scheme. In the future I hope to try some of the other types of poetry. I plan to get a copy of your book and see what's new.
I've heard it before and I sometimes feel the same way: I write poetry when I'm in a low mood.
Actually, that's when I'm most emotional and in touch with my feelings and thoughts that express better in verse. Doesn't mean I write sad poems all the timm. I write some humorous verse too.
However, as I speed along in my life writing and promoting my novels, it leaves little quiet time for thinking about poetry. As a result, I have only a few pieces left to submit.
I do love poetry, but I'm going to have to force myself to sit quietly if I'm to write more.
I'm thinking about starting my writing contests on my Web site once again. I may offer a poetry contest first. Nothing like a contest to wake the Muse.
