    Look and Listen

    Biography

Born in Leavenworth, Washington, raised in Portland, Oregon. Attended Whitman College; Reed College (B.A.), University of Chicago (A.M.), University of Hawaii-Manoa (PhD/ABD/area exam, 1985). As a son of third-generation Anglo-Saxon-Canadian-French-American descent, migrant farm worker parents, I have pursued a lifelong quest to understand the wisdom of India.

    Inspiration

Lifelong passion for philosophy of India, Advaita Vedanta, my specialty. Influenced by Emerson, Thoreau, Shankara, F.H. Bradley, K.C. Bhattacharyya; and Prof. Upadhyaya, Prof. Graham Parkes, Eliot Deutsch, Herbert Lamm, and Richard Peter McKeon, under which last five of whom I studied. In poetry, influenced by Phyllis (Hoge) Thompson, Nell Altizer, John Logan, John Unterecker, Thea Sullivan, Robert Bly, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Emerson and Thoreau. In fiction, influenced by Thomas Wolfe and Saul Bellow.
