“Mr. Corbett. I don’t know how else to tell you, but you are in kidney failure. I am admitting you through emergency. My first job is to save your life, the second, to keep you off dialysis as long as possible,” said my husband’s doctor. His primary care doctor had been seeing him for a variety of symptoms for several months, but had failed to put the pieces of his health story together for a timely and accurate diagnosis. Neither my husband nor I were actively involved in his care. With my medical background, I should have known better, but I was busy getting a master’s degree in storytelling. I didn’t stop to think it was time to get involved. Lying in the hospital that night I knew something had to change. I had been a quality management consultant for years helping businesses improve the way they did work, it was time to improve the way we cared for ourselves. The first of forty forms in the Partner With Your Doctor (PWYD) System was created in my head that night. I never dreamt it would lead to writing a book.
