Kathryn van Heyningen
I find humor where others may not, even in national politics. Prefer non-fiction, especially history & stories over overcoming life's obstacles. Biggest vice: espresso.

    Biography

Wife and daughter of retired Army, thus have had the opportunity to meet and interact with a variety of people. I have a short attention span, therefore, have an array of occupational experiences ranging from administrative to investigational work including a spell as a polygraph examiner. The latter helped me understand what makes people tick, taught not only the body language of deceptive people, but how their language differs from truthful speech and behavior. I was fired from a job as a typist for Retail Credit Corp., a company Congress investigated, but have since learned that a keyboard can be put to more constructive and entertaining use. I spent my formative years in Alaska and respect people who are self-sufficient and take responsibility for their actions. Whiners, victims, and people who see the glass as half empty, those who blame others for their own shortcomings drive me nuts!

    Inspiration

I was entranced by the work of Robert Service, the poet laurete of Alaska, his use of words, the humor and music of his ballads. Later, I found more complex literature with underlying messages more fulfilling, Shakespeare being the most fascinating not only in construction, but the historical aspects. As a result, my book is written on more than one level, though it can be read as just a good ghost story and tale of reincarnation. My biggest thrill was finding that some of my work was read over the Armed Forces Network during the Gulf War (1991) so the greatest number of members could enjoy it. That small occurrence proved that if a writer does his or her job well, when the words and message are sincere, that you can reach out and touch someone, brighten their day, and maybe make a small difference for someone in difficult circumstances. Should someone hand me a million dollars tomorrow, it will pale in comparison to the value of that one experience.
