    Biography

    Karen Vance Hammond is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana. She graduated from the University of the Ozarks in Arkansas with a double major in psychology and sociology. With a storm brewing outside, Karen knew she was socked in for the day. She opened her laptop and started writing. Six weeks later, her first novel, Shoe Marks was born. Addicted to the craft, she couldn’t put down her pen. The Monastery Murders along with the sequel, Identity followed which will be released through SynergEbooks. Currently, she is writing her fourth and fifth novels, The Cross Roads trilogy, and Surfside Erosion. Not only does Karen enjoy writing, she was a soprano for the Shreveport Opera for some time. She has had the pleasure of performing for Bill Clinton and Sam Walton. When not writing, she enjoys spending time with her family and her dog, Freckles.     Inspiration

    Adopted at birth, Karen Vance Hammond was born with an ear disfigurement and learning disability. Unable to read at a young age, she was placed in to Barrett Elementary Reading Center, in Shreveport, Louisiana. By the time she was eleven, Karen could barely get through an easy reader. In addition, she stuttered. Tenacious, Karen continued to fight the battle and eventually learned to read and write. Placed in LD classes all of her scholastic grammar, middle and high school years, she graduated in 1983 from South Wood High School. Her parents, who worked at Louisiana Vocational Rehabilitation with the disabled questioned if she could even make it through college. Her peers encouraged her to find a job, even if it was at a hamburger joint and be done with it. But no, Karen was not wiling to do that. Resilience combined with willpower Karen pressed to go to college. After extensive testing, Karen was accepted in to University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas in The Jones Learning Center. Karen was bound to make it. In 1988, Karen graduated with a double major in psychology and Sociology. With countless rejections letters, Karen was loosing all hope that her manuscript, Shoe Marks would ever be published. Nevertheless, she continued to submit. After a year, she received a call from the editor at Synergebooks. They wanted to see the first three chapters. Not knowing Shoe Marks fate, she chose not to bother the editor. After three weeks, she received a call. The editor wanted to see the rest of her manuscript. Excited that this could be it, Karen waited with much anticipation, which seemed like forever. Then on a Monday morning in January, she got the call. Shoe Marks was accepted for publication. All the hard work had paid off. She owes her writing abilities to the ones that cared enough to help her. Never a day goes by that she doesn’t think about Julie, Helen, Diana, and Betty.
