My Mom. But not because she was a writer...because she was an avid Reader. Books have always been important to her, and I think just knowing that made them important to me, too. There aren't many summer Saturday's I can remember when she wasn't snuggled into her overstuffed chair, nose stuck between the pages of a Red Silhoutte Novel, even while my brothers and I tortured her with Cicada shells (she's not a big fan of bugs!). When her free time wasn't taken up by one of us kids or my Dad, she always had a book in her hands.
From there, it had to be my 7th & 8th grade English teacher, Mr. Reimer, who let me get away with writing horror stories when everyone else was writing about their friends or pets. I wasn't the greatest student at that particular time in my life - but Mr. Reimer let me shine in my own way, even if it didn't match what was noted on the syllabus. To this day, because of him, I admire any teacher who is willing to put down their lesson plan and engage a student any way that works. Even if it involves a babysitter being chased through her home by a knife weilding serial killer. :)
Now, my inspiration comes from all that I love. My husband, who I met at a vampire role-playing game and married four years later. My Mom, who still reads her Red Silhouette books. And the love I've had of horror since I was a kid (and that's all because of Stephen King).
And hopefully, my love of writing will one day capture my daughter's attention the way my Mom's reading did for me.
