Jean Hackensmith
Write to live, live to write. That's my motto. I do what I do for the money, yes, but mostly I do it because I have to.
This is me, take it or leave it!

    Look and Listen

    Biography

I've been writing for 30 years and have 12 books in print. All of my books to date are in the romance genre (time travel, historical, and contemporary.) My newest release, "Checkmate" is the beginning of my break from the romance genre. I'm not saying I'll never write another romance; I have too many readers out there who would be upset if I didn't. I just felt this strong urge to try something new. About me...I'm married, the proud mother of three, stepmother of two and grandmother of ten. Next to writing, my passion lies in community theatre. In fact, I founded our local community theatre back in 1992 and still direct 3-4 shows per year. I also enjoy camping, bowling and playing cards. In fact, I'm hooked on on-line Canasta! I live in Superior, WI, on the western tip of Lake Superior.

    Inspiration

My idol is Kathleen Woodiwiss. As a young woman, I read everything she ever wrote. She passed away a couple of years ago, and I will miss her sorely. It was Kathleen's complex tales of romance, adventure, and suspense that inspired me to write something of my own. I had always been interested in the writing craft, even in junior high and high school, but didn't have the opportunity to practice or hone it until I was in my early twenties. I was talking to my mother on the phone one day and, always being a doodler, this...line just kind of came out on the page. I still remember it. "Jenny McCall awoke with a scream on her lips." Hey, I thought, that would make a good first line for a book! My first "masterpiece" was born. It was awful! I didn't realize that then, of course. I thought I was the NEXT Kathleen Woodiwiss. After a dozen rejection letters, I decided maybe it was time to hone my craft. I published "Wagons To The Past" about ten years later. My readers are my bread and butter. Many of them are also my friends. I like nothing better than to discuss my books with readers, which has led to many memorable relationships over the years. It's my job as an author to pluck people out of their sometimes mundane, sometimes stressful lives and take them to a place where they can lose themselves in someone ELSE'S problems for a time. I must make them laugh, cry, and even get mad...or I haven't done my job.
