Janice L. Barrett
Janice is a survivor of child abuse as well as domestic violence in her first marriage. She is committed to helping others who have experienced abuse begin their own healing process.

    Biography

    An abused child, then a young, abused wife, Janice developed a desire to provide protection to those who were unable to protect themselves. In 2004, she lost three immediate relatives within a six month period, all due to substance abuse. In her grief and anger she searched for answers to their untimely deaths. The three had the commonality of beginning their lives as abused children. It was then that she came face to face with her own abusive childhood and had to know why she had better survived it when others in the family did not. She began to research the statistics and studies of child abuse in relation to her own experience. Janice believes that the cycle of abuse can be broken and thus utilzed her years of research, medical knowledge, and personal experience to keep others from suffering the fate that she has witnessed, in her book, 'Choosing to Survive',Seeds of hope for abused children of all ages. Janice spent her working years in the care giving professions. Initially interested in nursing, she discovered her talents were best used in the adiministrative aspect of medical care, as she is a problem solver. In 1992, Janice founded a business in Sun City, Arizona, called The Patient's Advocate, managing medical billing papework for patients only, providing financial protection to her clients. During these years Janice gave many public presentations and received a lot of media attention. She sold her business and retired in 2000. Janice currently resides in Glendale, Arizona with her husband, Chuck, where she lectures and works to make the community aware of the social problem of child abuse.

    Inspiration

    The tragic deaths of three family members made Janice realize that she had information to share that might help others who are or have been abused. She had avoided and hidden the truth of her own painful, abusive childhood throughout her entire lifetime. She knew it was time to stop the lies and secrets and hoped that her experiences might help others identify their own situation and begin their own healing process. Through the telling of her own story Janice has received tremendous healing. She is totally committed to getting her message to as many people as possible
