Inspiration
One of my favorite words is epiphany — a sudden insight that changes the way you view the world. Speakers and writers like me better have these quite often, or we aren’t worth a darn. Mine came when I realized that 21st century journalism must be different from the kind I practiced during the early part of my career. Readers don’t care what’s on my mind. They want a newspaperman like me to work for them, to be on their side, to help them win fights they can’t win on their own. My bosses at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram figured this out before I did when they created a new job for me as The Watchdog investigative columnist, which combines column writing narrative storytelling and investigative reporting. Newspaper ads announced the new position with this tagline: “Finally, you’ve got somebody in your corner.” From the first day, this column was incredibly popular with readers. The mail is never-ending. The problems never stop. I strive to discover solutions.
