Inspiration
Before I embark on the long, terrifically arduous, and often heart-breaking process of writing a novel, there has to be something, the story, the characters, or the setting, that I fall in love with. If, after writing the first few pages this happens, then I am committed to the novel. For my first novel, Watch Over Thy Child, it was the setting, small town America, and the era, the fifties, that grabbed me. My second novel, Moskovsy Station, was inspired by a documentary that I saw prior to traveling to Russia. I was so moved by the plight of the small children living on their own in the Moskow train station that I just had to write their story. For my third novel, Road To Ensenada, it was the main character, Morgan, a cantakerous old man who captured my heart. Being a woman writing as a man was more fun than I've had in a long time!
