Inspiration

I am not an "inspired" writer. Sometimes it flows smoothly and usually the result is something only I can understand. The rest of the time it is work. Stephen King said it best in On Writing: ...shoveling shit from a sitting position.

That's writing in a nutshell. Even though I write nonfiction, On Writing is the book I reach for when I need to keep going. Sometimes my own work reads better than I thought and that helps too. The rest of the time...I'm flinging feces with what often feels like a soup spoon.

On the other hand, I enjoy research. I hate taking notes -- I prefer printing things out. And I love reading. I'd rather make money by reading instead of writing.

So much for inspiration. Sorry.
