Description

"The World From A Schwinn" a coming of age story filled with mystery, murder, suspense and humor for your consideration. The setting takes place in 1963 in the segregated southern city of Bessemer, Alabama. The featured character is an 11 year old kid name Taylor Denton (and his bike) who grows up poor in the civil rights era. Taylor is white but comes to understand, that as blacks suffered the painful plight of racial prejudice, he and his family suffered the plight of economic prejudice. With a dysfunctional father as an alcoholic, Taylor's view of the world held little hope until against all odds and with the help of his grandfather he received a gift he wanted more than anything else, a 1963 Scwhinn Stingray for Christmas that year. The moment his hands took the grips of the handle bars and his feet touched the pedals his life changed and his destiny was charted. Taylor rides his bike across social, economic and racial lines and experiences a world he never knew existed. He sees the world from the seat of a Schwinn. The story moves with heart touching and humorous moments in Taylor's life and the relationships he develops. Against societies acceptance of that time Taylor becomes friends with a black kid poorer than he is named Monday Johnson. Their friendship and bonds grows in secret until together they witness the murder of a prominent business man Bessemer and their lives are turned upside down. All throughout the story his Scwhinn Stingray bike plays an intricate part of his life. It is a trusted companion that he forms a bond with. The story has the same southern feelon the same line of "Fired Green Tomatoes", "The Help" and "My Dog Skip". It will take the reader on the ride of their lives.
