Description

“He closed his eyes and could smell the fish sauce, hear the early-morning chatter of street vendors, feel the cool breeze from the Gulf of Siam, and sense the calm before the storm. Birds chirped strange melodies of discordant warnings as he laced up jungle boots. Sweat already dribbled down his back and as he slipped into faded fatigues, his body was soaked. Across the tarmac from his quarters, Sergeant Kendle could see the rotors of a helicopter slowly start turning, catching the sunrise reflection shimmering from the blades. Stepping down the short steps of the barracks, he is joined by five others, boys too old to play, too young to die. Still, they assume they are immortal and with a resigned pride that only youth can know, they fall into a measured stride, their thoughts shared but unspoken. Where today may take them was anybody’s guess, but they know it won’t be like yesterday.” In Tales of the Yellow Silk, by Derek Hart, discover a different kind of war. This conflict had no rules, no sides, no objectives, no honor, no results, no history, no monuments, no winners, and no official players. It was real for those who lived it, both men and women. Daily life was not filled with the dread of being killed by the civilian population, as in Vietnam. No, here the Americans still patrolled, set ambushes, spied on the enemy, and saw a lot of Cambodia, but then came back for a cold beer in complete comfort and safety. The story's main character, James Kendle, is a sergeant in the US Army. Kendle's tour of duty after completing Ranger School at Fort Benning, is command of a Long Range Recon Patrol based in Lopburi, Thailand. Kendle arrives in Thailand and is assigned to Team Delta. Unexpectedly Kendle’s men are detailed to honor guard duties at the King’s palace. There Kendle meets Princess Mai, niece to King Bhumipol and they fall deeply in love. Soon the relationship proves difficult for them to pursue and eventually leads to discovery and perhaps even betrayal and ambush.
