Description

The book starts with a sexual abused runaway slave; Gizelle taken in by a European woman; Tallulah, who educates her, they adopt one another as they have no one else in the world. After slavery Gizelle becomes the town mid wife and unofficial doctor. She is sought out by my great grandmother; Annie when she finds herself pregnant by the son of the plantation owner where she works. When they throw her out without so much as a word from their son, she wants to get rid of the child she is carrying but it is much too late. Gizelle takes Annie into her home, heart and family and mentors her. Along with being the town midwife and unofficial doctor, Annie cooks for the town judge and has a speakeasy, whorehouse and is famous for her straight razor. and
